The past five years has seen the popularity of blogs grow in their use and as a means of making money. That's the meat that computer hackers look to sink their teeth into. A recent report by the Congressional Research Service stated that the financial impact of computer hackers amounts to $226 billion annually. Another report calculated that hackers could be taking up to six cents of every Internet dollar of revenue.

Hackers recently discovered that WordPress Blogs featured an easy path for them to cause their trouble. Many WordPress Blog owners have had their blogs hijacked in a variety of ways. They've found ads on their WordPress Blogs that they didn't place there. Others have discovered that when someone clicks a search engine link to be taken to their WordPress Blog they're instead taken to a totally different page full of ads that are often obscene and featuring computer viruses.

Here are just a couple of examples of what WordPress Blog
owners have been forced to deal with and what it cost them.

When these hacker attacks are discovered by search engine bots, Google for example, a warning is prominently featured on that blog's search engine listing that warns against visiting that WordPress Blog. People will instead be encouraged to click on the other result links which don't have the detected security risk. This chain of hacker inspired events will cost the WordPress Blog owner money, advertisers, reputation and of course steady traffic. The website in the screenshot was forced to drop their wordpress blog and create an entire brand new site which cost them time, traffic and money.

"Something scary happened today over at FiveCentNickel. Around 3:30 EDT today I noticed that traffic to the site was lagging way behind normal. Upon further investigation, I realized that my search traffic had all but dried up. Thinking I had been banned by Google, I dug deeper.

Oddly enough, I still ranked well for all of the terms that had brought me traffic in the past. So what was happening? If I was still ranking well in the SERPs, why weren't people clicking through?

Unsure of what else to do, I sent a shout out to all who are following me on Twitter. Among other things, I asked these guys to search for a few keywords to see if my rankings were holding up.

My search results were just fine, ruling out the possibility that Google had rolled out new search data that excluded little old me, and it just hadn't filtered down to our neck of the woods.

And then it happened

Clever Dude clicked on a Google search result and was redirected elsewhere. But when he clicked it again, all was well. When I reported this via IM to Jim, he checked it out and saw something similar. As it turns out, I was the victim of a WordPress hack that stole pretty much all of my search traffic, but somehow hid itself using cookies.

So where was all of my traffic going?

It was being shunted through www.anyresult.net (no link for you!) and then winding up at an spammy, ad-filled landing page on www.dealtime.com (again, no link for you. I've helped enough today). I suspect that dealtime.com had likewise been compromised, though I can't say for sure."

"Last week I had 2 problems that webmasters dread, being hacked and a catastrophic double server failure, I had both on different sites in the space of 2 days.

The first thing I knew about the hacking was when one of my writing partners Keith sent me an email and screenshot showing a strange error he was getting when uploading images to one of our WordPress blogs. The blog in question was running a pretty old version of WP with known exploits so that's how the hacker got in.

I did a bit of a rush job fix on this, by deleting (after backing up) all the previous WordPress files (n.b. NOT your custom files in the wp-content directory) and then uploading and upgrading to the latest version. It's important to delete existing files first as they could be compromised by the hacker and if the new version doesn't overwrite them the hacker could still have an access point. I also went through all files in the wp-content directory (plugins, themes and uploaded images) to ensure that they were the correct version.

Next thing I know I get the following automated email from Google:"

Removal from Google's index

Dear site owner or webmaster of mysite.com,

While we were indexing your webpages, we detected that some of your pages were using techniques that are outside our quality guidelines, which can be found here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html. This appears to be because your site has been modified by a third party. Typically, the offending party gains access to an insecure directory that has open permissions. Many times, they will upload files or modify existing ones, which then show up as spam in our index.

The following is some example hidden text we found at mysite.com:

Buy Acetylcholine
Buy Yasmin
Buy Tolazoline
Buy Benadryl
Buy Dichlorphenamide
Buy Viagra
Buy Lyrica
Buy Oxytetracycline
Buy Tussionex
Buy Meloxicam
Buy Fenoterol
Buy Streptomycin

In order to preserve the quality of our search engine, we have temporarily removed some of your webpages from our search results. Currently pages from mysite.com are scheduled to be removed for at least 30 days.

We would prefer to have your pages in Google's index. If you wish to be reconsidered, please correct or remove all pages (may not be limited to the examples provided) that are outside our quality guidelines. One potential remedy is to contact your web host technical support for assistance.

When you are ready, please visit https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/reinclusion?hl=en to learn more and submit your site for reconsideration.

I have to say, I've benefited James' tips on the forum were immensely beneficial in helping me secure my WordPress.

Several of my WordPress sites were hacked (as well as non-WordPress scripts, a directory script, and membership scripts I paid for). Some of the hacks were truly scary like one that used one of my sites as a launch pad to send out fraudulent Bank of America emails to extract innocent victims' financial information. Crap like that could land the wrong person in jail!

The most common hacks were ones based out of Turkey, who took their grievances and disputes out online on such sites as one I set up to help pets in shelters get adopted. They'd deface my sites with images of soldiers, curses against Israel and Norway (what homeless dogs and ferrets have to do with these hackers' grievances is beyond my understanding)

Anyway, after implementing James' suggestions to secure WordPress, hackers were no longer able to penetrate my WordPress sites, though my server did report that hackers were still targeting them, sometimes slowing my sites down.

Wordpress Secure would definitely be a wise investement. I say this, having already benefited from James' expertise in this area.

Ok well I just purchased WordPressSecured and I have to say it is detailed. I have been using WordPress for years and have read and implemented the majority of the security tips out there.

But, I have never seen anything like this. I can see that I have some work ahead of me this week updating my blogs.

James I have to say thanks for a great product that delivers what it promises.

Thanks James, just what I was looking for.

I had one of my blogs hacked a couple of weeks ago. Luckily, it was one that I hadn't spent a lot of time on so I just deleted and started it over.

It is a small price to pay to protect your business.

Again, thanks.
